Hip Hop Album/EP of the Week (Feb 3rd - Feb 9th, 2023)

Last week, was probably the busiest week of the year so far, in terms of new Creative and Conscious Hip Hop Projects that were released. Due to this, it was pretty difficult narrowing down to my selection for "Best Hip Hop Album/EP of the Week". But in observation thus far, I decided to go with the New Album from native Kansas, Texas based Emcee "Stik Figa" and Producer "DJ Sean P" entitled "Pookey: Stik Figa Finds Himself".

What makes this album standout instantly is the production by DJ Sean P. The music is extremely soulful with a smooth Boom Bap edge, it has numerous beat changeups but still well organized sequencing, which l believe keeps the listener intrigued and entertained. The lyrics on the album take a somewhat conceptual approach, as Stik Figa (aka Pookey) rhymes about his upbringing and his journey to find himself. The vocals on the album encompass not just lyrics from Stig Figa and other featured Artists, but also skits from family members who bore witness to his upbringing, and words of wisdom shared by Elders of inspiration.

The subject matter on the album touches on a number of topics such as the challenges of coming up in the streets, him being perceived sort of an outkast and misunderstood in High School, reminiscing on experiences with past friends and observing wisdom learned, learning from the OGs, striving to be respected and seen as what the streets deem as real, sharing a romantic connection with a special lady, gaining a deeper spiritual understanding and appreciation for God, learning about manhood/ what a real man is supposed to be, and growing from mistakes to finding purpose and being of service.

As you can tell, most of the topics relate to the album title, as they reflect on the journey of coming of age, from growing up in the hood to becoming a responsible man. And even though the lyrics are certainly present with substance, I have to say it is easy to get lost in the production because the beats are so soulfully entertaining. But what's especially dope is that you get the best of both worlds lyrically and production wise. Enjoy the new album from Stik Figa and DJ Sean P entitled "Pookey: Stik Figa Finds Himself" now available on bandcamp and dsps
